Miriam Barbosa

Artistic Director of Miriam Barbosa Dance, formerly known as South Carolina Contemporary Dance Company since 2007 choreographing and performing worldwide. Ms Barbosa is a former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company and a faculty member at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance and Alvin Ailey School. She holds an MFA in Architecture & Urbanism from the University of Fine Arts, Brazil, where she also received her Classical Ballet Training. She was the assistant Professor of Dance for the University of South Carolina, and she has taught and choreographed for Fashion Institute of Technology, SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, Paul Taylor Summer Intensive, Nevada Festival Ballet, Barcelona Institut del Teatre, Lisbon Dance Co, Portugal National Conservatory of Dance, Ginasiano Ballet School, Rome Olympic Auditorium, Emproart Brazil, USC Dance Conservatory, Center for Dance Education, Barcelona Dance Center and the Corella Dance Academy. She is a Specialized Master Trainer of Gyrokinesis and Gyrotonic Method for Dancers. In SC, Ms Barbosa staged Graham’s masterpieces Diversion of Angels, Appalachian Spring Suite, Maple Leaf Rag, and Sketches from Chronicle, which became a documentary broadcasted with ETV. She has choreographed several dances including Seven Deadly Sins, Divine Comedy, Catharsis and Blood Memories, awarded one of the best choreographies for Danza & Arte Festival, Pietrasanta, Italy. She is also known for performing in non-traditional spaces such as arts galleries, museums and outdoor spaces, adding multidimensional sensorial experience through the use of aerial techniques. Ms. Barbosa has premiered several works at the NY Live Arts Theater including Transcending which has opened the theater doors for the first time after the pandemic. She has performed with Dzul Dance for over 20 years and most recently they have performed their latest collaborative work in Brazil (MiriamBarbosa.com) 

Javier Dzul

Dzul Dance Artistic Director, he grew up in the jungles of southern Mexico performing Mayan ritual dance until the age of 16. Formal dance training began at the Universidad de Veracruz at which time he also became a principal dancer with Ballet Nacional de Mexico and Ballet Folklorico de Mexico. Javier then received a scholarship to study at Ballet Nacional de Cuba where he remained until 1989, when he was awarded another scholarship by Martha Graham to study at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance. Since his arrival in New York Javier has worked with numerous dance companies. He performed primarily with the Martha Graham Dance Company, Pearl Lang Dance Theater, Battery Dance Company, Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, American Indian Dance Theater. He has performed as a guest artist with Acroback and Red Sky Productions (Canada). In 1995, Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA) of Mexico awarded Javier a scholarship to pursue his dance career in the United States. Javier began choreographing and performing his own work in 1999. He established Dzul Dance in 2003. In 2009 Javier became the founder and director of Compania de Danza Contemporanea y Aerea del Gobierno del Estado de Campeche; a dance and aerial company funded by Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (CONACULTA) of Mexico and the Government of Campeche. That same year the government of Campeche (Yucatan) awarded Javier el Premio de San Fransisco, an outstanding lifetime achievement award, for raising international awareness about Mayan culture. Javier and his company have been featured by National Public Radio, Univision’s Despierta America, American Latino, Bloomberg TV, NY1 & CUNY TV. They can also be seen in photographer Acey Harper’s Private Acts: the acrobat sublime, published by Rizzoli in September 2010. Dzul Dance has been performing at NYLA Theater for several seasons, promoting the awareness of indigenous culture through the fusion of Mayan history, modern and aerial dance (DzulDance.org) 

Andrea Dusel-Foil

originally from Casper, WYand has performed professionally in North Carolina, Maryland, Las Vegas, Copenhagen, and New York. She has performed with Martha Connerton Kinetic Works, Ballet Theatre of Maryland, Ballet Mink, The Coppola Rhythm Ensemble, The Flowers Project, The Cougar Ball, The Cougar Ball Third Time’s a Charm, and Night of 1000 Stevies, Miriam Barbosa Dance and Dzul Dance for over four years. She serves as Three For The World Project Manager and Dzul Dance Company Manager. She has taught at Ballet Theatre of Maryland Conservatory of Classical and Contemporary Dance, and University of Nevada Las Vegas. Andrea holds a BA in Dance from UNC Charlotte, a Professional Training Certificate from North Carolina Dance Theatre, and Independent Training Program with Alvin Ailey and an MA in Exercise Science from Pennsylvania Western University. She also teaches Pilates, Lagree Fitness, Yoga and Barre, and she launched Andrea Dusel-Foil Fitness 

Danielle Marie Fusco

native New Yorker,  she is a dancer with Dzul Dance for over 7 years performing in NYC, NJ, LI, and Mazatlan & Campeche MX. Danielle served as Festival Coordinator in Dzul International Dance Festival and is currently the Director of Outreach for Dzul Arts Community Outreach. She has choreographed Off-Broadway for “The Anthem”,“The Vanity”(Theatre Row), “Tink!” (NY Musical Festival), National Arts Club, NY Innovative Theatre Awards, Night of 1000 Stevies. She has also performed with Jazz Roots (NYC), Martha Graham Co (Sam Pott’s Episode in American Document at the Joyce Theatre), Graham 2, Luigi Jazz “String of Pearls” and “L'uRhythmics”; soloist/choreographer for Rachel Klein, EAC GO! At STREB in “Devaneio” by Marcela Duarte, Edgar Cortes Dance Theatre, Noemi LeFrance, NejlaYatkin, Buglisi Table of Silence, Miriam Barbosa Dance, Jazz Dance Legacy (Las Vegas), Fini Productions (Italy & NY). She has taught at Martha Graham School, Rioult NY, Luigi Jazz Technique, Peridance, Sceneindgangen (Denmark), NYU, PACE University, Kean University, Nazareth College and Eastern Suffolk BOCES. Danielle holds a BA in Dance & Education from the Marymount Manhattan College, and she has Teaching Certificates from Martha Graham School and Luigi Jazz Center; and she trained aerial arts at Circus Warehouse. 

Itzkan Dzul Barbosa

currently a member of NY Theatre Ballet and former dancer with Miami City Ballet. She began classical ballet training at age 2 at the USC Dance Conservatory and the Center for Dance Education with Carolina Ballet, where she performed several roles including Odette in Swan Lake. Itzkan has studied Summer Intensive Trainings at CPYB, ABT, SFB, Barcelona Dance Center and she was awarded a full scholarship with the Paris Opera Ballet. She has trained in NYC at Ballet Academy East where she has performed the lead role in Balanchine’s Walpurgisnacht Ballet, amongst many other works. Itzkan has been highlighted by the Adrienne Arsht Center Mural Project in Miami, FL, painted by Brazilian Artist Eduardo Kobra. 

Sasha Bass-Ulmer

originally from Fayetteville, NC but attended high school in Chicago, IL. She graduated in May (22’) from NYU with a B.A. in Politics and a minor in Psychology while also being in the scholarship program at The Ailey School. This summer Sasha has attended Springboard Danse Montreal, The Ailey School summer intensive, and The Rockettes Conservatory July and August sessions. Sasha is thankful for her family and mentors for this wonderful opportunity. 

Federico Garcia

Dancer with Dzul Dance since 2012 in NYC where he also danced with Staten Island Ballet, Darrell Thorne and other projects. Federico is originally from New Mexico where he began his dance training as a teenager at the suggestion of friends with Michele and Kevin Self, attending the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and The Rock School summer programs among others. While earning a degree in opera performance at New Mexico State University he continued to study dance performing with the University Contemporary Dance Company. 

Kennyth Montes De Oca

Dancer with Dzul Dance since 2018. He is originally from Dominican Republic and he holds a BFA in Dance from Rutgers University. Montes De Oca has performed works by Bill T. Jones, Darrell G. Moultrie, Frederick E. Mosley, George Balanchine, Maxine Doyle, Keith Thomson, Maxine Steinman, Randy James, and many others. He is a former dancer with Ballet Hispanico, and currently a member of the Company of Collaborative Artists under the direction of Camille Moten. 

Aaron Smith

originally from Nashville, TN, began his dance training at his hometown studio. He holds a BFA in Dance from Florida State University in 2021 and moved to New York City to pursue choreography and performance. He has choreographed Relief in Tandem (2019), and For the Sake Of (2020). Both dances in their respective years were selected to be performed at the American College Dance Association’s Southeast Regional Conference. At FSU, he has performed in dances choreographed by faculty members such as Tim Glenn, Donna Uchinzono, and Franciso Graciano. Along with his training at FSU, he has attended summer and winter intensives at Paul Taylor American Modern Dance in New York. He was recently awarded the Anthony Morgan Undergraduate Choreographic Award. This is his first season with Dzul Dance and Miriam Barbosa Dance. 

Oren Yaari

originally from NYC,Oren’s relationship to dance is a reflection of his family’s encouragement to be wildly bold and courageous with creativity. Movement to him is a tool for expression with strong emphasis on connecting himself and others to truth. In the past year, Oren has worked under the supervision of Francesca Dominguez performing in her latest work of “Galvanizing Steel” as part of her MFA thesis from Hunter College, as well as “Nesting” which was done in collaboration with Doug Varone at Gibney Performing Arts Center. This is his first season with Miriam Barbosa and Adrianna Thompson. 

Michael Mustafa Ulmer

Musician (Oneness), he is a multi-instrumentalist/ vocalist born in Detroit, MI who is continuously wielding his artistry as jazz pianist and percussionist while perfecting his hypnotic drone grooves on the Didgeridoo. Son of the iconic guitarist James Blood Ulmer, Young ‘Blood’ Ulmer also owns his vocal prowess as a baritone singer, balancing his roles as a music director, songwriter, composer and music educator. Mustafa graduated from Indiana University’s School of Music with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, with a concentration in voice. Living in New York City for the past 20 years, Mustafa has had the great opportunity of recording, performing, and touring with amazing New York based artists including, his father James Blood Ulmer, the singer/griot storyteller Nana Camille Yarbrough, and choreographer Donald McKayle. He continues to build, share and expand his mission as a Teaching Artist/Accompanist in New York City public and private school organizations such as Def Dance Jam Workshop, Manhattan Country School and The Ailey School, where he played for Ms Barbosa’s classes and started composing for her work since Spring 2021. 

Stahv Danker

Musician (Oneness), born in LA was born in Los Angeles and raised in Israel. At 6 years old he started playing piano and later he specialized in Drums and Percussion. He studied music at the New School Extension for Jazz and Contemporary Music in Tel Aviv, Israel. After two years he was awarded a scholarship to the Jazz Department of the New School in New York, where he earned his BFA in Jazz and Contemporary music. Soon after, he was selected to perform a two-week residency at the “Bern Jazz Festival” in Switzerland. In 2019, Stahv was the First Call drummer for the Off-Broadway “The Office: A Musical Parody” show. Meanwhile, accompanying for professional dance classes as a Percussionist and Pianist in New York City's leading dance schools Martha Graham School of Contemporaray Dance, The Juilliard School, Alvin Ailey School, Peridance Center, Steps on Broadway, and Gibney Dance. On February, 2022 he released his own album “Music for Modern Dancers" which includes 60 tracks of original Percussion and Piano music for the Martha Graham Technique™ and Modern Dance.
