Miriam Barbosa

Contemporary Dancer, Teacher & Choreographer
Specialized Master Trainer, Gyrokinesis & Gyrotonic Expansion System

 

Ms. Barbosa founded Miriam Barbosa Dance formerly known as South Carolina Contemporary Dance Company (2007-2014) and she faculty at the Martha Graham School. he is a former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company and former Dance Professor with USC Dance Program. She holds an MFA in Architecture & Urbanism from the University of Fine Arts of Sao Paulo/Brazil, where she also received her Classical Ballet Training. She is a Gyrokinesis and Gyrotonic Method Specialized Master Trainer,  and she has developed a unique pedagogic vocabulary for body conditioning, injury prevention, skeleton alignment, balance and  overall strength & flexibility directed towards the dancers’ body architecture, educating dance teachers worldwide.


In 1991, she was awarded a scholarship as Technique Demonstrator for the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance. Ms. Barbosa performed with the Martha Graham American Touring Ensemble from 1993 to 1996, guesting with Martha Graham Dance Company for their City Center Seasons in New York City and Spoleto Festival, Italy (1993-1996). After working as a guest artist for the Institut del Teatre, Barcelona (1996) and Emproart, Brazil (1997), she returned to New York to dance with the Martha Graham Dance Company from 1998 to 2001, and became a Professor with the USC Department of Theatre & Dance from 2002 to 2009. She has taught and choreographed as a guest artist at the Fashion Institute of Technology, SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, Paul Taylor Intensive at the School of Performing Arts in NY City, Nevada Festival, Institute of Theater of Barcelona, Spain, Lisbon Dance Co, National Conservatory of Dance of Portugal, the Ginasiano Ballet School, and the Rome Olympic Auditorium, Center for Dance Education, SC, Barcelona Dance Center and DAP Festival, Italy. Ms. Barbosa has been honored with the licenses to restage some of Martha Graham’s masterpieces such as Diversion of Angels, Maple Leaf Rag, Appalachian Spring Suite and Sketches from Chronicle. During 2007, she collaborated artistically with the Martha Graham Center, ETV, and USC Dance Company to produce Sketches from Chronicle Documentary broadcasted at PBS during the Columbia Arts Festival. She has collaborated with several artists in the creation of The Seven Deadly Sins, The Divine Comedy, Catharsis, Blood Memories amongst several others. Catharsis was awarded its first grant from the Sumter Arts Commission for its creation in 2005 and it was reconstructed for the SC Contemporaray Dance Company Season in 2009 in collaboration with Visual Artist Marcelo Novo and ETV for Artopia Arts Education Program, produced and directed by Betsy Newman. Blood Memories was recently awarded one of the best choreographies for Dance & Arts Festival (DAP), Italy. She is also known for performing in non-traditional spaces and adding dimension with aerial techniques and multi discipline collaborations such as Columbia Museum of Art, for their Contemporary Arts Exhibition and Impressionism Exhibition Gala, and the Brian Rutenberg State Museum exhibition. Her recent choreography Resilience inspired by Stepan Grytsay’s Violin Quartet has been staged in SC, NY, Italy and Spain throughout the Spring and Summer 2018. Currently, Ms. Barbosa is honored to choreograph Enter the Luminous inspired by Marika Popovits’ paintings and James O’Dea’s poetry premiering at the NY Live Arts Theater in collaboration with former Taylor dancer Francisco Graciano and music by John Stone. This artistic collaboration is also a film project by Monticello Park Productions keeping the work alive for prosperity. This choreography has also been performed at the Dance and Arts Festival in Pietrasanta, Italy. The most recent work Simultaneity also inspired by a new series of paintings by Marika Popovits is going to premiere in Boulder, CO to be performed by Miriam Barbosa and Jennifer Peterson, a former Graham Principal Dancer in addition to Luminous and in collaboration with another choreographer for the Event Duet Series at the Dairy Arts Center. 


Ms. Barbosa has been invited to choreograph a new work for the Summer 2019 Artistic Project with DAP Festival, Italy in collaboration with artist Pablo Atchugarry and his sculpture series.
